Can i make a wall of plasterboard in the bathroom

Finishing of walls and other surfaces during repair is very important. The finished appearance will help to give the walls of plasterboard in the bathroom, this material is mounted easily and is inexpensive. For the work with gypsum cardboard, special skills are not required, and even a beginner can, by observing accuracy, finish the room well. It is important in such a wall decoration to ensure good ventilation in the bathroom, preferably an external exhaust.

Walls in the bathroom of plasterboard

In the bathroom with gypsum cardboard walls there should be good ventilation, otherwise moisture will penetrate into the walls.

In the absence of this condition, even facing with moisture-resistant coatings will not last long, as moisture will penetrate into the walls themselves.

It will also be necessary to stock up with such materials and tools as:

  • plasterboard;
  • metal profile;
  • roulette;
  • gon;
  • level;
  • pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • knife;
  • sandpaper;
  • dowels;
  • mineral wool;
  • building foil;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • glue;
  • saw;
  • water-based paint.

The profile for fixing gypsum cardboard in the bathroom is used only for metal, as wood under the influence of moisture quickly deteriorates, and also serves as a breeding ground for airborne mold and other pathogens. Impregnation of wood with various compounds in this case will help very briefly. To avoid rust, which can appear on the iron, use profiles made of aluminum or galvanized.

The use of plasterboard in the bathroom and other rooms with high humidity is possible if the material is special and water resistant. Ordinary drywall for such work is not suitable. Distinguish moisture-resistant gypsum cardboard from ordinary it is possible not only under instructions on packing, but also on green color.

Moisture-resistant properties of walls are achieved by adding additives to the core of gypsum sheets, which have water-repellent and bactericidal properties, and additionally sheets of cardboard are covered with protective compounds on both sides. Experts recommend that even a moisture-resistant plasterboard be covered with water-repellent paints or other kind of finish that protects from moisture. For wall cladding, the thickness of the material must be at least 12 mm. When calculating the number of sheets, you need to take into account a small surplus, which will help in the event of a marriage and errors in work.

Wall Preparation

Drywall is mounted on level walls, which should not have cracks, chips, protrusions, depressions and scratches. An even result of the work can guarantee the pre-installed metal frame. With this technology, it is also possible to additionally equip arches, niches or shelves. The metal profile is fixed with dowels, then mount the posts into the guides. The distance between them must be at least 600 mm. The received crate is the basis for the sheathing sheets and their further installation.

Walls, after it has dried in the bathroom plaster, it is recommended to cover with a moisture repellent antiseptic with a deep penetration into the surface. Dry plaster layer should not less than a day, the same amount of time is required to dry after priming the surface. Plasterboard sheets must also be treated with a water-repellent primer before installation.

If the bathroom is present in the open form of various electrical communications leading to lamps or ventilation, it is necessary to take care of their isolation additionally. Usually wires in such cases hide special plastic boxes. The special box will prevent not only the influence of moisture, but also protect against the shorts of material with a metal profile, which can lead to shock or short-circuit fires. The same tubes will allow you to easily replace the wires, without destroying the finish on the entire surface.

The existing pipes are insulated using mineral wool. Before that, they need to be primed and several layers of paint applied, giving each layer the required drying time. Thermal insulation is needed to prevent the appearance of condensate on the pipes, which in the closed space contributes to the occurrence of corrosion and destruction of drywall. First, the pipe is wrapped with mineral wool, and a layer of foil is additionally laid on top. No insulation is required on plastic pipes, but it is recommended to wrap them with soundproofing, as the water in them is much noisier.

Drywall on the wall

On smooth and plastered walls, gypsum board can simply be glued. If the walls are leveled and there is neither time nor desire to prepare them, it will not work without a metal frame. Need a frame and in the event that it is planned to further decorate the walls with tiles. To drywall together with the tile did not fall under its own weight, a metal frame is necessary. In those places that are subject to the most frequent mechanical stresses, the frame should be reinforced.

Correspondingly marked and trimmed sheets are first applied to the frame to ensure correct calculations. Then, each sheet is attached to the profile by screws. The hat of the screws is recessed into the material completely, so as not to create a channel for moisture penetration. Using a metal frame, you can not only trim the walls and ceiling, but also make a screen that closes the bath.

When gluing plasterboard glue is applied to the walls and the inside of the sheet, using a paint brush or roller. The adhesive must have suitable properties, i. E. be moisture resistant to keep the sheets on the wall in a room with high humidity. And even in this case, this type of finishing in professional construction is considered short-lived, as when fastening to a metal frame sheets last longer. Ceilings glued method never cleans, as the concentration of moisture there is too great. Do not install on the ceiling of the bathroom and ordinary lamps, because they also require additional waterproofing.

Finishing

When all sheets are fixed properly, you can proceed to finish the joints between them. It is required to remove dust and other small particles from the surface. Then the surface is treated with a primer to seal the attachment points with screws and corners. Dry dry putty is treated with sandpaper.

As a finishing finish, you can apply ordinary painting with water-based paints. For a durable, long-lasting coating, at least 3 layers must be applied, waiting every time the previous layer dries.

Bathroom design with plasterboard

With the help of drywall the bathroom can be made unique.

Plastering and painting, as a rule, is quite enough for a quality exterior finish, but there are other ways. Tile or mosaic over plasterboard walls are very common, it is not too difficult to perform this kind of work.

Very impressive and beautiful looks finish natural or artificial stone, but the price of such a coating does not always justify itself. The same applies to cork covers, which for the bathroom should additionally be covered with moisture-proof compounds.

Minus drywall can be considered that when removing from it a tile, a stone or a mosaic, the repeated exploitation of sheets of drywall is impossible, it irreversibly collapses.

But if all the described work rules are observed in accuracy, the plasterboard finish will last for many years.
