The use of wall panels in the bathroom instead of traditional ceramic tiles has recently become very common. This solution is relevant for almost any bathroom interior design. Installation of wall panels is possible not only on the wall, but also on the ceiling of the bathroom.
Wall panels are very convenient and easy to install, as well as water resistant.
Benefits of Panels
The main advantage of such panels is that they are moisture resistant, so they are best suited for wet rooms. Do not confuse plastic panels with MDF panels, because their use in the bathroom is impractical.
PVC panels are very convenient and easy to install. The inexpensive price, in comparison with ceramic tiles, makes them very popular.
Docking wall panels is very easy, to put special efforts here is not necessary. As a rule, quality panels have a lot of transverse walls, due to which the wall panel has a certain strength. The voids in the panels are often used to lay electrical wiring in them. The surface of the wall panels is covered with a special protective varnish, which protects well from mechanical influences and damages.
Good thermal insulation, incombustibility and self-extinguishing give this material even greater popularity. Temperature differences are not dire, which is very important for bathrooms. Unlike ceramic tiles in PVC panels, almost no dirt accumulates and no mold is formed.
Variants of wall panels for the bathroom.
The variety of textures and colors of wall panels makes it possible to combine them with almost any design of the bathroom interior. Due to the shape and technology of fixing the wall panels (in the form of locks), the finished version of the installation looks holistic, without borders and transitions.
The main disadvantage of this finishing material is the reduction of the bathroom space due to the finishing technology, as the panels themselves are mounted on wooden slats. Therefore, their thickness should be minimal.
Selection of material
To select the right material, you first need to understand the classification of panels, their varieties and sizes.
Externally, the PVC wall panels are similar to the lining, they have the same fastening system - the spike-groove. Their length ranges from 90 cm to 3 m, width varies from 13.5 to 30 cm, thickness - from 8 to 12 mm.
If you want to make the bathroom room visually wider, you can put the panels not vertically, but horizontally. Accordingly, to make them appear higher, position them vertically.
Plastic panels, located vertically, visually reduce the room.
The sheet wall panel looks like a plywood, and the front side perfectly imitates valuable trees, leather.
The most popular thickness is 3-6 mm. Due to the fact that the panels are large, their installation does not take much time.
The tiled version of the panels is made in the form of a square, with dimensions from 30x30 to 90x90 cm. Using such models, combining different colors, one can make a mosaic.
If your bathroom is small in size, it is best to choose a light-colored panel, so as not to reduce the already small space.
Gloss with a reflective effect will help visually increase the bathroom. Most preferable colors are from light pink to light blue.
Before you buy the panels, you need to check them for quality: they should be without dents, the surface should be smooth, without waves.
Check the connection locks by attaching them to each other. They should fit tightly to each other, the joints should be practically invisible.
Tools for mounting panels in the bathroom.
Preparing for installation
In order to do installation, you do not need special knowledge and skills. It can be performed by almost any person who has little experience of using construction tools.
To carry out the work you will need:
- drill or perforator;
- a hammer.
In order to make the crate, you need to prepare wooden slats and impregnate them with a special antifungal and water-repellent compound.
Also, you can buy ready-made plastic straps for installation, which are sold in most building stores.
Do not use wall panels immediately after they have been brought into the house, especially if the outside temperature is below zero. It is necessary to allow them to lie at room temperature for at least 50 minutes. Joints must be dry and clean.
Only if the walls of the bathroom are perfectly flat, you can mount the panels directly on the wall, but in practice this happens extremely rarely. Any bathroom will have unevenness, imperceptible at first sight. Only during the installation will there be defects that can damage the appearance of the bathroom.
In order to make the crate, you need to perform measurements of the bathroom, namely the height or width of the walls. If the panels are positioned vertically, the lath should be horizontal (and vice versa). As a crate, a metal profile can be used. If you use wooden slats, the optimal size is 10x30 mm.
The scheme of finishing the bathroom wall with plastic panels.
Before you begin the installation, mark the walls of the bathroom. All irregularities should be identified and eliminated. They can easily be eliminated by placing small pieces of wood under the slats in places where holes and irregularities are found.
Planks or profiles should be located at a distance of at least 30 cm from each other, with the extreme should be close to the wall (top and bottom or left and right).
If the bathroom is concrete, then the installation of the crate must be done with the help of dowels, and the screw must be longer than the plastic dowel itself exactly on the thickness of the rail. Only the spacer of the dowel must be in the bathroom wall.
If the walls of the bathroom are made of wood, then for fixing you can use both nails and screws.
After the crate is installed, install the necessary fittings and guides to hide the corner joints of the wooden lining. On the floor, place a plinth of PVC, preferably with a box, if it is necessary to hide the wiring.
Finish the bathroom you need to start from the door. The joint of the first panel must be turned outward. Fasten the panel with a stapler or screws. Cut wooden planks to size in sequence, after the previous one is fixed. When the corner panel is fixed, it should be cut off with a margin of 4-5 mm, since the distance from the end panel to the wall in different places will be different.
If unevenness in joining panels is detected, they should be treated with a sealant.
Thus, installing PVC panels by oneself is not a difficult task. To do this, you need to have only minimal skills in working with basic construction tools and strictly follow the technology of work.
