How to lay tiles on a wall

Laying tiles on the wall - the procedure is not so much complicated as it requires extreme care and attention to detail.

Bathroom tiling with ceramic tiles

Ideal floor and wall cover for the bathroom is a ceramic tile, it is moisture resistant.

Having gained practice and "stuffing" the hand, you will be perfectly able to cope with this matter, but at first the work may seem to you a painstaking work. Nevertheless, "it's not the gods that burn pots," and it's entirely affordable for any house owner to lay a tile.

Tools and materials

In order to lay the tile qualitatively and for a long time, you will need certain tools:

  • level;
  • roulette;
  • tile cutter (glass cutter);
  • roller;
  • nippers;
  • pencil;
  • marker;
  • Bulgarian;
  • a spatula for rubber;
  • spatula spatula;
  • spatula simple;
  • sponge;
  • screwdriver or drill plus a set of crowns for drilling holes in the tile.

In addition, it is necessary to use materials such as:

  • primer;
  • tile;
  • crosses for tiles;
  • adhesive for tiles;
  • zatirka.

Calculation of quantity

If you plan to lay a tile with patterns, then draw a sketch and check in your calculations with the store sellers to be reinsured.

Combining the layout of tiles

An interesting solution is the combination of both the tile itself and its layout.

If you plan to put tiles on the wall right up to the ceiling, and the ceiling will be hinged at the same time, there is no need to lay the tile to the very top. After calculating the right amount of tiles, buy it with a margin, 10% more than necessary.

Ways of laying

There are three ways to lay the tile on the wall: diagonally, in the dressing and "seam in the seam". When laying the tile "seam in the seam" it is laid out one after another horizontally and vertically. When laying the tiles in the second way, each row is shifted to the side by half a plate. The installation of ceramic tiles in a diagonal way is considered the most difficult and laborious, because it requires cutting. This kind of laying looks very nice and original, but it's not recommended to begin masters for it.

The first and extremely important condition for the tiling to look good and the execution of the work was done without errors, a flat wall. And walls in buildings almost never happen even, even if they seem so. On a curved wall, for all the skill of the master, laying the tiles will have defects, and all efforts will go wrong. For quality repairs, it is always necessary to start with the leveling of the walls.

If your wall has already been leveled, it must be carefully primed. If you are going to put the tile in place of the previous old tile, then after removing it, you need to assess the condition of the old plaster and remove any defects on the wall.

Wall layout

So, the walls have been prepared, the primer is made, and you are ready to start laying the tile. This process does not start from the lowest row, but from the second, because the height of the wall rarely has an integer number of tiles, they need to be pruned. Mark the height with which the masonry is planned, then place the tiles against the wall and mark their upper bounds.

According to the mark, using the level, draw a smooth horizontal line along the entire length of the wall and exactly along this line, install an aluminum profile or a bar, on which the second row will hold. If a profile is used and the surface of the walls has small irregularities, then it should be fixed in places of close contact with the wall, otherwise it can be bent. The profile will serve as the basis for the lower row of masonry. Its presence is necessary to maintain the tile at a given height. After the glue dries, the profile is removed. Do not forget to align your guides to the level, otherwise the tile will lie crooked.

Mounting process

How to lay a tile? Start at the corner. You need to determine which angle to start with. Mark the boundaries of the area where you plan to lay the tile, mark the corners. The tile at the corners, as a rule, has to be cut. If there are rosettes and pipes in the way of the masonry, keep this in mind. Plan your masonry so that you have to cut the tile as little as possible. For the finishing of the corners it is better to purchase special corners. Decorative corners will hide sections of shortened tiles.

Cutting Tools

For cutting tiles it is better to use a special tool - tile cutter. It is easy to use. It is necessary to note the line of the cut with a pencil and put the tile in the tile cutter, hold it along the line from the bottom up, and then press the bar above the tile. If you need not just cut the tile in half, but cut out the shape, for example for a pipe, use a grinder with a diamond disc. To drill holes in a tile, for example, for a wire, use a drill, drill a special drill. If you need to cut the edge of a tile half a centimeter wide, that is small in size, use a glass cutter. Draw a line and split off the edge using pliers or pliers. Glass cutters are sometimes used for cutting tiles instead of tile cutters, but this is not an ideal tool. With its help, the tile is either difficult to break, if it is thick, or it is easy to break not by the cut.

Dilution of glutinous solution

Dilute the purchased adhesive according to the instructions. A lot of breeding is not necessary, because it quickly hardens. The glue is applied in two ways: directly to the wall or directly to the tile - to whom it is convenient.

In the first case, the glue applied to the wall is leveled with a notched trowel, creating a zone for fastening 2-3 tiles. The thickness of the layer is not more than 5 mm.

In the second method, hook the required amount of glue with a conventional spatula and apply evenly to the surface of the tile, then take a special trowel with denticles, tear off excess glue from the surface of the tile, leaving the necessary grooves to adhere the tiles to the wall. The size of the incisors of this spatula: for tiles on walls - 4 mm, for the floor - 6-8 mm.

There is a recommendation to soak the tile beforehand before laying it. It is believed that soaked in water for a couple of hours, tile is better laid on the wall. But many practicing masters, although they do not object to this recommendation, do not themselves tile the tile, claiming that it adheres well enough to the wall and without this preparatory procedure.

The tile with the glue applied on it is laid on the place put to it so that it "has risen" on the fixed profile. Apply the tile to the wall, press it. It is better to knock on it by hand, carefully, so as not to damage the tile.

Then take the level and adjust the vertical and horizontal position of the plane. Begin to lay the rest of the tiles in the intended row. In passing, we control the level of the vertical and horizontal. Between the tiles, it is necessary to insert special cross-shaped struts (they are also called crosses). These crosses serve to ensure that the gaps between the tiles were exactly the same. If the tile you put is wrong, which shows the inserted cross, you can immediately adjust its position directly on the wall.

It is necessary to lay the tile on the wall, avoiding its protrusion. You can check the uniformity of the tiles by applying a flat bar or level to the entire row and looking for any gaps. If you find any, then align the tiles by adding or decreasing the glue, where necessary.

After lay out all the rows, remove the aluminum profile and lay the bottom row. If necessary, trim the tile. The profile should be removed after the glue has dried, i.e. after a day.

The final point of work - grouting joints. To fill the joints, special mixtures are sold. Remove the left crosses and apply the required amount of the mixture with a rubber spatula. Take the mixture more, its excess can be easily removed with a cloth or sponge.

Ensure that the grout is spread evenly over the joint. Wait a few minutes and, after the grout dries a little, take a piece of wire or cable a bit wider than the distance between the tiles, and with pressure push them through all the gaps.

It remains to clean the tile - and the work is done.

Let's sum up, what you need to pay attention to when laying:

  1. The original flat surface of the wall.
  2. Perfectly fixed profile.
  3. Precisely calculated number of required tiles in order to reduce as few tiles as possible.
  4. Shortening the tile, take maximum care and accuracy. Beginners are better able to practice on an unfit for use tile.
  5. Constant adjustment of the level of the horizontal and vertical surface.
  6. The same width of gaps and uniformity of the row of masonry.
  7. Uniform grouting of seams.

Do not skimp on materials and necessary tools, especially if you are a novice master, not a professional.

Special tools will help to avoid unnecessary damage to the tiles. The quality of glue and tile is the determining factor of longevity and quality of your work. The lack of tiles during laying can turn into a real problem if the store does not have the material of the right shade, which you could buy and report.

If all of the above requirements are fulfilled, you will get a good tile laying. You can proudly invite your friends to admire your skill and taste.
