How to level the floor under the tile

Leveling the floor under the tile is a key point in the repair work. The surface should be perfectly flat, without the slightest roughness and flaws. However, wondering how to level the floor under the tile, you will have to master several technologies at once and purchase the arsenal of the corresponding tool.

Tiles on the floor

To smoothly put the tile on the floor you must first align it.

Leveling technology

The leveling of the floor usually begins with the preparation of the working surface. Initially, the room should be ventilated for several hours, and then, on the contrary, carefully close all the windows and doors, so that the draft does not penetrate there. The floor temperature in this case should not be below 5 degrees, in order for the solution to solidify, but not frozen. Before leveling the floor, it is recommended to clean it from dust and dirt with a vacuum cleaner. Especially carefully it is necessary to walk on the corners, where the dust accumulates the most.

Floor tile alignment scheme

The scheme of leveling the floor for the tile.

If there are irregularities and crevices on the floor, they must first be repaired or removed mechanically. For grinding the floor, a perforator perfectly suits, with the help of which even irregularities of 1 mm height leave. If such a procedure is not carried out, the screed will permanently deform, and on the laid layer the tile will appear chipped. In addition, the tile may not bond properly with the adhesive material, which will lead to its detachment.

However, before leveling the floor, its surface should be checked with a level. The laser level with a minimum error percentage of 0.2 mm / m is the most preferable. If the differences in floor height are too large, they must first be removed with a floor screed. Over the floor screed floor will have to be mounted and a waterproofing layer. This is done in order to prevent the penetration of water to the concrete base. It will not save even the most high-quality tiles from moisture, for which this moment does not pose a danger. But the moisture on the concrete has a devastating effect.

After the floor has acquired a relatively even structure, it is possible to start preparing the layer on which the tiles will be laid.

The soil composition is gently poured onto the previously leveled surface and distributed over the floor surface. It is important to ensure that the solution is spread evenly across the floor and lie down with a layer of the same thickness. To achieve the corresponding effect, it is strongly recommended to use wide building spatulas. Drying such screed will be from several hours to a week, depending on the chosen manufacturer.

Screed types

Floor leveling is carried out exclusively with the help of specially designed mixtures for this purpose! Conditionally they can be divided into several categories:

Application of self-leveling mixtures

The self-leveling mixture is poured and leveled with a needle roller to remove air bubbles.

  1. Self-leveling floor mixes for tiles. This option is considered the most acceptable for those who rarely have to do repairs themselves. The self-leveling mixture spreads on the surface independently, without requiring the participation of a person in this process. It has a high percentage of fluidity, therefore, when deciding to level the floor in this way, it is important not to lose out with the volume of liquid poured. In addition, this mixture quickly solidifies, forming a hard glossy layer. This material can be called specific, used directly for alignment for materials such as gypsum, carpet, linoleum and, especially, under the tile.
  2. Leveling compounds. Such mixtures have a fairly thick consistency, they must be smeared on the floor by hand. Dry such a solution will be long enough and as a result of leveling, the human factor plays a significant role: it is important to distribute the solution uniformly on the surface, avoiding distortions. Thinking about how to level the floor under the tile and stopping your choice on this method, you should add the level to the arsenal, which should be used after each layer is laid. Such a mixture for leveling is considered universal and suitable for almost any job.

The screed obtained will have an attractive appearance, but it can not be used without an additional protective layer. Otherwise, the coating will be quickly erased and the alignment will have to be carried out again.

Selecting any of the presented types for the preparation of the floor for the tile, you must carefully read the technology, which recommends that the manufacturer himself adhere. In some cases, instructions on how to level the floor under the tile, it is proposed to fill the dry matter in the water, and in some of them we mean a diametrically opposite procedure. From observance of this nuance directly depends, whether it will be possible to level out a floor correctly by own strength or for the help it is necessary to address to the expert.
