How to make a cabinet under the sink

At least two places in the apartment (in the kitchen and in the bathroom) are fitted with sinks. Even if the shell itself is elegant enough, the communications that lead to it spoil the entire interior of the room. The most simple option to fix the situation is the curbstone under the sink with your own hands.

Functional curbstone under the sink

The drawer under the sink simultaneously allows you to perform several functions: creating a beautiful shell appearance and storing the necessary accessories.

Trade organizations offer a huge number of different pedestals, but such acquisitions are not cheap and cause big problems in their installation in small-sized premises. The curbstone under the sink in the bathroom allows you to take into account all the nuances - dimensions, interior, functional focus. The very question of how to make a cabinet under a sink or a sink is not very difficult and can be solved by anyone.

Specificity of design

When designing pedestals in the bathroom, you should consider some specific requirements. First of all, it concerns the conditions in which it is located. The table is exposed to moisture, high temperature, steam. Do not exclude the ingress of a significant amount of water to the material, including hot water, during leaks. These conditions require the use of waterproof materials or adequate protection.

The question of how to make a cube is acute for shells that are already installed and have a mounted system for supplying water and sanitation. This requires the choice of the cabinet design for a certain type and size of the shell with a predetermined communication geometry. In addition, usually the dimensions of the curbstone are strictly limited to the presence of a free area (volume).

Features of choice

Sink cupboard with drawers for laundry

If the curbstone under the sink is intended in the bathroom, then it must have drawers for laundry.

By the location of the curbstone can be divided into bedside tables under the sink (sink) in the kitchen and the bedside tables under the sink (washbasin) in the bathroom. The location of the pedestal determines certain features of the structure. For the kitchen is usually characterized by an increase in the functionality of the countertop and the corresponding expansion of its area. The lower volume of the pedestal has an increased height for installing the container for garbage. In the bathroom cabinet it is desirable to provide boxes for collecting laundry.

The design of the pedestals depends on the type of shell - a curved or rectangular and immersion bill. A curbstone for a rectangular or inclined shell usually covers it completely with its countertop. Figured shells have a decorative appearance, so the front of the shell should be taken out of the countertop. Kitchen sinks can have their own effective surface, which can play the role of table tops.

Preparatory work

Carrying out measurements under the curb

Before the start of the cabinet, all necessary calculations (width, height, etc.)

Before you make a cabinet under the sink, you need to determine the location of its installation. Cleaning of the working area is carried out and communications are checked. All pipes must be dry.

The required measurements are carried out using a tape measure. First of all, the dimensions of the free zone around the sink are measured to determine the size of the curbstone. Then the dimensions of the shell and the height of its location are specified. The calculations of the communication system are measured - the diameter of the pipes, the length of their sections, the type and size of the exit from the wall.

Since after installing the cabinet, access to the wall under the sink will be limited, it is necessary to prepare this section of the wall. If it was not previously lined, then it should be done. It is advisable to provide fastening to the wall of the frame of the cabinet, for which on the wall are fixed plates or slats.

Elements of construction

The curbstone under the sink consists of the following main elements: table top, frame (frame), sidewalls, shelves and additional hinged elements. The table-top is most often made of chipboards. To increase the water resistance to such worktops, it is necessary to impose a protective coating (paint, varnish, adhesive film) or to coat them with plastic. The ends of the board are carefully ground and covered with a protective layer of silicone or other water-resistant composition. The ends can be protected and at the same time decorated with adhesive tape, polymer tape, and in the kitchen - covered with an aluminum or polymer profile.

Worktops can be made of wood with a thickness of at least 20 mm or plastic plates. The bathroom looks beautiful glass countertops. In the kitchen, the countertop as a rule is played by a metal sink of the right size.

The frame is usually made of wooden bars. If the cabinet in the bathroom provides for the legs, then they are made of a wooden block and are tied with wooden collets into the frame. The size of the bar for the legs depends on the massiveness of the pedestal and can range from 20x40 mm to 40x50 mm.

If the legs are not provided, then the lateral collets can be attached directly to the sidewalls.

For collet we use a bar or strip of chipboard with a thickness of 20 mm and a width of 30-40 mm.

Sidewalls and shelves are usually made of chipboards 18-20 mm thick. If there are legs or a full frame, the sidewalls do not carry loads and can be made from plywood.

Manufacturing of a curbstone

One of the most common and simple is a pedestal of rectangular type. To make this type of cabinet, it is necessary to cut a window to the size of the shell using a jigsaw in a rectangular table top, repeating all its bends. Usually the inner edge of the shell coincides with the end of the countertop, while the outer edge is 10-20 cm away from the other end. The size of the countertop in the lateral direction depends on the chosen dimensions.

The bedside table itself can have several options. If the legs are not provided, then the frame is assembled directly on the sidewalls. In this case, the two sidewalls are made by a thickness of 18-20 mm, a width equal to the width of the countertop, and a height equal to the distance from the floor to the upper edge of the shell, minus the thickness of the countertop. At the top and bottom of the sidewall are joined on both sides by webbing (collets) 20 mm thick and 50-60 mm wide (top) and 80-100 mm (bottom). Collets are fastened by the wide part in a vertical direction with the help of furniture corners with the alignment along the butt of the sides.

If the design provides for the legs, they are made of blocks of 20x30 mm or 20x40 mm. The length of the bar is chosen in the same way as the length of the sidewalls in the first variant, and the sidewalls themselves are made of plywood to facilitate the construction and their height is reduced by 100 mm. The front and rear bars are connected in pairs by collets to each other. At the top, a strip 20 mm thick and 50-60 mm wide is fixed to the bars by a wide part in the vertical direction with an alignment along the upper end of the bars. At the bottom of the collet is made of a bar of 20x30 mm and joins the legs at a height of 100 mm from the floor. The sidewalls are attached to the bars of the legs with an indentation of 100 mm from the floor. The lateral cut is aligned along the side edge of the bar.

The next step is the cutting of the shelves. According to the results of measuring the dimensions of the pipes and the drain mechanism, the window is cut out in the shelf for their placement. The shelf (or several shelves) should be free to cover the pipes. On the inner side of the sidewalls, drill nests are installed to install the dowels under the shelves or the profiles for securing the shelves at the correct height are fixed. The bottom of the curbstone, made of plywood, is fixed. If there are legs, the bottom is fixed at a height of 100 mm from the floor.

Assembly is carried out in the following order. On the countertop, the ends of the cut out window are smeared with silicone. The table top is placed on the bottom from the sink. Under the table top, a frame is mounted and fixed to the table top and to the wall (if it is provided) with the help of furniture corners. The installation site of the shell is greased with a sealant. All joints of the structure are primed.

Doors are made of wood chipboards, wood or plywood. If necessary, they are faced, painted or decorated at the discretion of the performer. Drill holes and install handles. At the ends of the hinges are fixed along the entire height. Then the hinges of the door are fixed on the sidewalls or frame of the curbstone.
