A modern shower enclosure is made of metal, plastic and other modern materials. Its main advantage is lightness and mobility, it can be easily disassembled and moved to a new location. But it also has disadvantages, among which not the last place is occupied by limited strength, following certain standards and some facelessness. If you want to create something of your own, exclusive and individual, it is best to build a shower by yourself, with your own hands. Finishing can be done using tiles, and ideally put a mosaic that will make it almost unique. Such a cabin will be stationary and durable and can last many decades.
The use of a mosaic shower in the device makes it possible to carry out a wide variety of motifs and drawings that will emphasize the design of the room.
The main advantage that can be provided by the shower cabin, made by own hands, is just a departure from the standards and the maximum use of available space. The owner can equip it, proceeding as from the specific features and tastes, and from premises possibilities. Mosaic will create the color environment, which will make the stay in the shower room comfortable for the owner of housing. To build a shower cabin, as well as lay out its mosaic with their own hands, almost everyone, for this purpose, does not need a special construction qualification or special skills. The place for it is better to choose in the corner of the room, it is more convenient and helps to avoid unnecessary work.
The order of construction
The shower tray can be laid out of bricks.
Before the mosaic cockpit with its own hands will be implemented, it is necessary to prepare a place for it. All old coating and screed is removed to the surface of the concrete floor. Then put the first layer of waterproofing, which is used as a polyethylene film or rubberized fabric, laid on a layer of bituminous mastic, and it can be used to install walls of brick. Waterproofing the floor of the shower cabin is of particular importance, otherwise the dampness can go to the basement of the house or the lower floor apartment. From the brick, you can lay out the floor of the pallet by installing a drainage system in it. The height of the pallet itself can be 25 - 30 cm. Then a second layer of waterproofing is put on the brick in such a way as to close the sides of the pallet. On it you need to put a reinforcing mesh and pour a screed from the cement slurry with a liquid glass, which will create additional insulation from dampness. In this case, it is necessary to create a small slope towards the drain hole in such a way that the water does not stagnate on the surface of the pallet.
Do not forget that the shower and walls must also be watertight. It is easier and more effective to plaster the adjacent walls and ceiling with the same cement mortar with liquid glass. In these walls you can lay pipes for additional equipment, which is very popular. It can be a device for hydro-massage or a "Charcot" shower. There will also be electrical wiring for lighting and forced ventilation. It must be very well insulated and the output voltage must be no more than 12 V for safety reasons. After all these works are completed, you can prepare a mosaic for laying. For this, certain preparation of surfaces and materials is necessary.
Scheme of mounting the shower ladder.
First of all, it is necessary to remember that the surface on which the mosaic is placed should be perfectly flat. In fact, unlike tiles, the mosaic will not hide minor irregularities, but will make them more noticeable. Therefore, the surface must be carefully leveled even at the stage of plastering, using pre-installed beacons and templates that take into account all dimensions. The result is checked with a plumb and construction level. As a base, plasterboard can also be used as a material with a perfectly flat surface. However, on the surface absorbent to the surface, no glue can safely hold the mosaic, so the gypsum board must be primed with bituminous mastic beforehand.

Next, you need to determine the adhesive composition. It can be either cement-based or polymer-based. The choice is determined by the surface structure on which the mosaic will be laid. It is worth knowing that the color of the glue can be either gray, a shade of conventional cement mortar, or white. If the shower is finished in light colors, then it's best to take white glue. Unlike ceramic tiles, the mosaic elements have a certain degree of transparency, so that the gray glue will make the mosaic more dark, which will affect its external attractiveness.
If the base is plaster or plasterboard, then cement glue for tiles, such as the German "Ceresite", is quite suitable. If it is made of wood or plastic, then you need to use polymer glue. Ideally, the mosaic on the floor and the lower part of the walls should be placed on a reactive adhesive of two components, which will serve as a good addition to the waterproofing. The mosaic elements themselves are made from a glass paste and can be attached to a substrate made of a synthetic fiber mesh or paper, making up a web of a certain area. This greatly speeds up the installation process.
It must be remembered that the mosaic cabin with your own hands will be made quickly enough if you comply with all the requirements of the stowage technology and the sequence of operations.
The shower, finished with mosaic, is very practical, as this material is waterproof and shockproof.
- On the leveled and carefully primed surface, the adhesive is applied using a comb-shaped spatula, the teeth of which have a length of 0.6 to 0.8 cm. It is laid flat, accurately repeating the surface. A large area should not be smeared, so that the glue does not freeze before applying the mosaic coating.
- On the layer of glue is placed a mosaic cloth on the grid or paper. If the mesh is laid up with a mosaic, so that it completely disappears into the thickness of the glue, then the paper is placed face outwards and then removed with a wet rag.
- Alignment of the mosaic surface. Each cube separately align will not work, its area is too small. You need to take an even large surface, which is quite handy for a hand grater, which is cleaned with putty. It is pressed down the surface of the mosaic, while simultaneously monitoring the alignment of the seams between the elements.
- Cleaning of the surface of the mosaic from the emerged streaks of glue. This must be done immediately, until it is frozen. If it is a polymer glue, you can use denatured alcohol or simple vodka for this. Clean the glue between the tiles of the mosaic with a small spatula or simply a screwdriver.
- Rubbing of joints with special putty compound. To do this, use a rubber spatula with a width of 20 cm. The excess composition should be slightly dried, and it can be wiped off with a wet sponge or cloth.
Similarly, you can cover not only the floor and walls, but also the ceiling. Such a shower cabin will serve as long as possible. Mosaic after hardening of the adhesive is more resistant than even a tile coating. Unlike it, its elements do not crack and lag far less easily. If the mosaic is behind, then its elements can easily be glued into place. A shower cabin, finished in this way, creates a certain feeling and mood. The possibility of taking a shower in it can only bring pleasure.
If you follow all the above recommendations, then you can make such a mosaic booth yourself within a few days from start to finish.
