How to make a water heated floor in the bathroom

Any bathroom should be in a warm state, because the person there takes water procedures. The floor covering in this case almost always remains cold. You can, of course, lay a warm rug, but it has the ability to absorb moisture, which quickly dampens and can become moldy. Therefore, many people in the modern world prefer to install in this room a warm floor.

Some people are frightened by the prospect of self-installation, but in fact, it is possible to install such heating for everyone. Of course, the cover is different, but special attention should be paid to the water variant. The fact is that the water floor has a lot of advantages:

  • simple installation;
  • safety in operation;
  • does not occupy extra space;
  • uniform heat distribution;
  • warms the entire room well.

But most importantly, such a warm floor does not overdry the air, as conventional heaters. But this is an important factor, because dry air negatively affects many organs in the body, which leads to the development of certain diseases. The device is a floor covering is quite simple.

And it consists of a flexible pipe, which is mounted in the lower layer of the warm floor. In this pipe, the circulation of hot water constantly occurs. It can be connected either to central heating, or to hot water supply, or to a gas boiler. There are plenty of options. You can install the tube on a concrete surface, making a screed, without ties and on a wooden surface. The most popular and durable is the first option, which is worth considering.

Preparatory work

First of all, we prepare the basic framework. In order to avoid moisture from the lower floors, the floor in the bathroom must be waterproofed. The base should be well cleaned, that is, you need to remove all debris, dirt and even dust, and then inspect the surface. If cracks and chips are found, they must be sealed. In order for the circulation to pass without interference, the base floor must be level. If there are slopes or notches, then they are closed and filled with a new screed. Another layer of concrete will allow the heat to remain only in your bathroom, not heating the neighboring ceiling. This screed should be made with a thickness of not less than 50 mm.

Then the waterproofing film is lined. The reinforcing mesh is laid on top, to which a polypropylene tube is attached. Insulating material, whatever it is, you need to lap the walls, and an important rule is the integrity of the material. This is necessary in order to protect the substrate from water ingress. After all, someday, the service life will come to an end, and the tube can burst. By the way, if you are limited in means, you can use polyethylene film (but dense).

Next, you can (but not necessarily) lay a heater, for example, a foam having a thickness of 30 to 50 mm or polystyrene (20 mm). On top it is desirable to lay heat-reflecting material: foamed polyurethane of sufficiently thin thickness, which is covered with heat-resistant foil. As you know, the foil is able to direct heat in the right direction.

To ensure that the cement screed does not crack, and the flexible pipe has not moved out of the place, it is necessary to make reinforcement, so that your warm water floor will be of high quality. For these purposes, it is preferable to take a metal mesh, which has a cell maximum of 50-100 mm, the wire should be 3-5 mm thick. The reinforcing mesh is laid on the lower surface and completely fixed in no way.


To heat transfer was more effective, there are tricks how to lay a water-heated floor. Experts advise a flexible tube to be laid in the form of a snake, that is, one after another. You can lay and spiral, but this method is used mainly for large rooms, and the bathroom, as is known, has a small or medium area. The distance when laying from walls and doors should be 15-20 cm. In places of bends and loops one must make from a single piece, that is, without joints. The length of the contour of the pipe is 50-60 cm. The step between the bends should be about 10-15 cm.

Laying in this order the water floor, you can proceed to fix it. There are several options. The most simple and inexpensive is ordinary wire. It is it that fixes the pipes to the reinforcing mesh. It should be taken into account that it is impossible to tighten the pipe tightly, otherwise it can be deformed. The next option, than you can fix the warm floor in your bathroom, is special clips, fasteners, tapes and hooks, which are sold in any store for construction purposes. In the finished pipe (factory), which is designed directly for the water floor, there are two special free ends that connect to heating pipes or other outflow pipes.

You can connect flexible tubes directly to these outputs, but you can also do so that you can adjust the heat of delivery. To do this, there is a unit of equipment, which includes a distributor comb, a cock, a thermostat and a circulation pump. All this mechanism perfectly fits in a decorative, small in size, a locker that can be placed in the bathroom. If in your room there are special niches for the pipeline, these communications can be hidden there.

When the warm water floor is properly secured, it is necessary to check it by running the heat transfer fluid. The first tests will show if there are leaks and at what speed the circulation passes. To do this, connect all the elements, and for 2-3 hours a check is made. Then you need to turn everything off again and carefully inspect and feel the pipes and the floor (warm). If a leak is not detected, then you can proceed to the next stage.

This kind of insulation is poured either with a concrete screed, or with a special mixture that is sold in stores.

For example, concrete is considered the most commonly used material, because it is reliable, durable and cheap. To independently prepare such a solution, you need to mix M-300 cement (not lower), sand (experts recommend using screenings, as the clutch is higher) and water. Some masters add special plasticizers to the solution, thanks to which the screed does not crumble, but becomes plastic.

In the process of using a cement screed, it is necessary to dry it properly. It is unacceptable to turn on the heaters and the more you can not connect the water-heated floor. The solution must dry naturally. In order not to create cracks from above, you should periodically water the screed with water and cover with polyethylene. Only in this way it is possible to achieve a high-quality screed. The time for full drying takes a lot: about a month. The cement is poured in the usual way, it is leveled with a roller with denticles. The solution must completely cover the pipes.

Unlike concrete pouring, semi-dry or dry mixtures dry much faster, but the price for them is appropriate. In such mixtures, modifiers are always added. Information on how to dilute the solution can be found on the package. Here you need to carefully monitor the proportions, otherwise the mixture will not get the quality that you expect. If you are afraid that it will not work, then you can use already prepared mixtures. By the way, experts check the degree of readiness in this way: they gather a handful of solution into their hands and tightly squeeze. If liquid leaks through the compressed fingers, then the solution contains a large amount of water. The solution is considered ideal if a lump is formed without the release of moisture.

The finished solution is applied to the prepared floor with pipes and is leveled using a building rule. After about 20-30 minutes, grouting and grinding is carried out. It is advisable to do this with a special grinding machine, but if there is none, then use the usual method. The mixture dries out after 12 hours, that is, after this time you can already walk on the surface. And after 96 hours you can make all the finishing works, after which the warm floor in your bathroom is provided.
