Nowadays, kitchen faucets and bathtubs have a different design and origin. The forms and design of sanitary equipment are changing. However, the general rules for how to fix the faucet are preserved. This operation can be carried out by almost any person with their own hands.
Any water tap or mixer consists of a body, a shut-off (regulating) mechanism, a spout (spout) and a control element (handle, lever). The main role in the crane is the locking mechanism, which determines the main differences of the cranes. According to the principle of operation of these mechanisms, valve and ball valves are distinguished. In addition, according to the control method, the cranes (mixers) are divided into single-handed, double-ventilated and single-lever. A single valve valve controls only one water flow (cold or hot), and the tap (mixer) consists of two single-handed systems. A single-arm valve controls two flows of water by pushing or turning one lever, which is provided by the design of the locking-regulating mechanism.
The valve system is based on the reciprocating motion of the worm stem when the control element rotates. The simplest design includes a crane-axle, which presses with a different force the rubber gasket to the water inlet. A more sophisticated modern design is based on the use of ceramic faucet-axle boxes. Such a crane-bug has two plates with a lumen. When the lumens overlap, the water flow is directed to the spout.
In ball valves, a cartridge in the form of a ball is used as the locking-regulating element. A through hole is drilled in the ball. When this hole coincides with the hole through which water flows, the flow is fed into the spout. The same principle of operation is also laid in single-lever valves (mixers). In this case, three holes are made in the cartridge. By turning it in different directions, different water flows are provided. The cartridge is usually ceramic.
The body of any crane has three main zones: the entrance zone, where the tap is combined with tap water; exit zone, which is sometimes combined with a spout; zone of the saddle. The saddle is the responsible element in the form of a polished flat section with an opening connecting the inlet and outlet zones. In the saddle, the flow of water is controlled by pressing the locking element against the seat site with different forces. In the same zone, there is a tide having a threaded hole for fitting the valve.

The most common tap-valve (valve) consists of a body (axle box); worm spindle; the guide sleeve; rod with a pad for fastening the gasket; gaskets and stuffing box. The spindle with a worm thread moves inside the box, which has a similar internal thread. One end of the spindle has the form of a square or a gear for mounting the handle, and on the end there is a threaded hole for attaching the handle. At the other end of the spindle, a groove is provided for fitting the stem. In this slot, a rod is installed, which, when the spindle rotates, moves the pad with the gasket progressively. The gasket is attached to the rod by a screw. For the direction of movement of the stem in the box, a coupling can be installed, but there are valves without this element.
The sealing of the spindle in the bush is carried out by the gland nut. It is screwed into the axle from above. The nut has a stuffing box packing from the pack. Between the nut and the axle is a rubber gasket. All parts are usually made of brass or bronze.
The principle of the valve is simple. When the handle of the crane is turned, the rotational motion is transmitted to the spindle, which, while rotating along the stationary bush, simultaneously moves translationally. This translational motion is transmitted freely to the rod installed in the groove. Rubber gasket, fixed on the rod site, is pressed against the seat of the valve seat, overlapping the hole.
Types of malfunctions

The most common and simple malfunction is a small leakage from the tap spout after complete closing. This happens because of the wear of the rubber gasket. Poor (non-smooth) regulation of water flow may result from damage to the gasket; partial overlapping of a hole of a saddle of the crane by elements of a lining or other particles which have got with water; partial wear of the spindle thread.
Strong water leakage can be caused by both destruction of the gasket and damage to the threads of the spindle or axle box. Damage to the threaded connection of the spindle and the axle box can cause the valve to jam.
The water leakage can be observed in the entrance area of the spindle in the axle. In this case, the cause is a damage to the rubber gasket between the packing gland and the journal or stuffing box between the spindle and the stuffing box nut. The leakage of water in the place where the valve is attached to the valve body is caused by the wear of the rubber gasket installed between the valve and the valve.
Sometimes the cause of the impossibility of completely closing the water flow is damage to the crane seat area. Such damage, as a rule, can not be repaired.
Replacement of rubber gasket

The wear of the rubber gasket of the locking-regulating mechanism is most often observed, which is especially noticeable for hot water. Rubber is in severe conditions and, naturally, is subject to considerable wear and sometimes destruction. And at its destruction, it is possible to hit individual pieces of rubber into the adjustment zone, which prevents smooth flow regulation. If worn, the gasket should be replaced. For regular replacement, it is advisable to have a standard set of rubber gaskets.

Вручную выкручивается шпиндель из буксы в сборе со штоком. Откручивается крепежный винт и снимается изношенная прокладка с площадки штока. Устанавливается новая резиновая прокладка и закрепляется винтом. Шпиндель в сборе обратно вкручивается в буксу. Устанавливается прокладка между гайкой и буксой. Прижимная гайка закручивается в кран. Включается вода и проверяется герметичность соединения.

Sometimes it is not possible to completely block the water due to damage to the thread of the fitting. In the event that the main part of the thread is not broken, it is possible to extend the life of such a valve. Repair the valve by installing a thickened gasket. This gasket will reduce the length of the required spindle travel, thereby only a good part of the thread will be involved. The spindle is assembled in the same way as a simple replacement of the gasket. The gasket is removed even if it is not damaged. A thickened rubber gasket is installed. Such a gasket can be cut from a piece of rubber of the desired thickness. In the center of it, a screw hole is pierced with a screw. Rubber gasket is fixed on the rod site.
If the cause of the fault is determined correctly, the mixer can be completely repaired by yourself.
If the water leakage in the spindle outlet area is outward or with a slight damage to the threads of the axle box, the water tap can be repaired by making a new stuffing box packing. To do this, after closing the water, it is necessary to remove the stuffing box nut (bush). The nut itself is unscrewed by a swing or spanner, but with the obligatory condition of the stillness of the axle box. It should be held with a second key. Using an awl, the gland ring is removed.
Then it is necessary to supplement the packing or replace it completely. For packing, flax threads are used, which are tightly wound on the thread in the direction of twisting the sleeve. After each turn, the thread should be sealed with a screwdriver in the thread groove.
Packing after winding is impregnated with oil.
