Bath is one of the most popular accessories. Because of the frequent influence of hard factors on it, the surface layer of the bath becomes disagreeable over time. Enamel crackles, flakes; dirty stains appear on it, rusty stains, etc. Repair with acrylic solves the appearance of such an important element of home comfort.
Acrylic has high strength and long service life.
Earlier (and sometimes even in our time), the bath surface was reconstructed by applying a new layer of enamel in various ways. Such repairs were carried out only by specialists, and the surface layer itself was short-lived and began to collapse after a short time. Repair of acrylic in liquid form solves the problem of reliability. The modern technology of applying acrylic is simple, the repair of the bathtub can be performed on its own.

Typically, liquid acrylic is a two-component mixture comprising a polymer base and a hardener. The acrylics of Stakril, EkoVan and Alfavanna brands were used most. According to its properties, acrylic and coating from it have unique characteristics.
Acrylic has a low thermal conductivity, which ensures a long-term preservation of the heat of water poured into the bath. For example, the rate of water temperature decrease in a bath with an acrylic coating is more than 30 times less than the cooling rate of water in a conventional cast iron bath under the same conditions.
Acrylic coating has a very high strength and durability. The material is resistant to high temperatures and aggressive substances. The surface of the bath after applying acrylic coating becomes less slippery, while the appearance has excellent decorative qualities.
Repair of a bath with liquid acrylic can be conditionally divided into several stages:
- Preparation of the bath.
- Mixing of liquid acrylic.
- Direct production of the coating by the filling method.
Dismantling of the bath elements is done with the help of pliers or a screwdriver.
Bath preparation is a very important step. All defects that have remained from the old coating may appear on the new coating, and it will be impossible to eliminate them after the completion of the work.
Preparatory work начинаются с демонтажа вспомогательных элементов. Необходимо снять внешние элементы систем слива воды из ванны и перелива воды. Способ монтажа определяется типом ванны, но, как правило, выполняется с помощью плоскогубцев и отвертки.
On the floor of the bathroom under the corresponding holes in the bath set dishes for collecting acrylic. If these elements can not be dismantled, they should be insulated with scotch tape, and then think about how to decorate their surface, so as not to spoil the appearance of the entire surface of the bath.
Step-by-step painting of the bath with acrylic: preparation, grinding, applying acrylic, painting.
In this case, remember that there is a strong dusting of the room. This means that you need to protect yourself with a protective mask or respirator. In the absence of the right electric tool, grinding can be done in a more labor-intensive way - by grinding an emery cloth with a grain size of up to 40.
After grinding, the surface is cleaned carefully from dirt and dust left after treatment. First, the dirt is washed off with water. Then the surface of the bath is treated with solvents to cleanse from fatty contaminants. The most commonly used acetone. As a solvent, drinking soda, prepared in the form of a thick solution (consistency of gruel), can also be used.
Sometimes the enamel layer of the old bath is subjected to severe local destruction in the form of deep cracks and chips (up to the metal of the base of the bath). Such damage can not be grinded. In these cases, deep defects are sealed with an automobile putty with a shortened pour time. Place the treatment with putty thoroughly sanded with sandpaper.
Often, insoluble contamination and the remains of old enamel are concentrated in the inaccessible places of the bath. You can clean such areas with acid. After finishing all types of treatment, flush with hot water.
Preparation of acrylic
The restoration of the bath with acrylic paint is carried out in bulk.
Liquid acrylic for bath repair is obtained by mixing a mixture of two components - a polymer base and a hardener. To do this, a white thick mixture from the standard purchase container is carefully poured into the mixing bowl. When opening the container and pouring into the container, it is necessary to completely eliminate any dirt entering the mixture. The mixture is mixed for a short time (for several minutes) by hand using a bar or scapula. Stirring is performed at a low speed until a homogeneous mass is obtained. The use of power tools is not recommended to avoid the formation of air bubbles with rapid mixing.
The hardener from a small jar is gradually added to the mass while mixing the mixture. It is advisable to pour the hardener in several portions. After each portion of the hardener, more thorough mixing is carried out for 2-3 minutes. When mixing components, the proportions indicated in the mixture certificate must be strictly observed. Typically, the hardener is 9.5% of the acrylic base. After completely filling the hardener, the mixture is mixed by hand for about 10 minutes. The resulting liquid acrylic is left to stand for 10-20 minutes, after which it is ready for use.
The color of liquid acrylic can be provided as desired. In order to obtain a mixture of the desired shade, color paste is added to it. The mass is thoroughly mixed. The color content should not exceed 3%.
Formation of acrylic coating is done by filling.
Uniform distribution of the mixture better occurs on a warm surface, for this, the bath is filled with hot water and aged for 10-15 minutes.
After that, the water is drained off, and the surface of the bath is quickly and thoroughly dried with a hair dryer or with a cloth that does not leave the villi.
Example of a bath before and after applying liquid acrylic.
Liquid acrylic is poured into a small container, from which it is convenient to drain the liquid in a thin, uniform trickle. It is most convenient to form a canal on the edge of the container in the form of a spout as a watering can, you can use a small watering can. At the beginning of the operation, a thin strip of the mixture is applied to the outer edge of the side of the bathtub adjacent to the bathroom wall. Using a spatula, the mixture is pushed under the slab of the tile.
The main process for the production of acrylic coating is based on the flow of liquid mass under its own weight from top to bottom. For this, an acrylic mixture is poured onto the inner edge of the bathtub edge from the tank. The mixture flows in a thin trickle and gradually slides down the side walls of the bath. The amount of liquid to be filled is determined from the condition that the thickness of the formed layer should be 4-6 mm, and the acrylic mass reaches approximately the middle of the bottom of the bath. The poured jet of liquid acrylic moves slowly along the perimeter of the bath until the circle is completely closed.
The flow must be provided in a uniform and non-stop mode. After passing the entire perimeter of the bath it is necessary to apply acrylic on the bottom. By spiral movements of the filling tank, a uniform filling of the bottom of the bath is ensured along its entire surface. It should be borne in mind that to eliminate the inflows and streaks in the course of the flow of the mass is not recommended. They should disappear after the process is completed and when the coating is cured. Very unsuccessful execution of acrylic pouring and the appearance of uncoated areas should be corrected with a flexible spatula, without using paint brushes. Excess weight flows through the drain hole into the container installed under the bath.
Hardening of acrylic coating can occur within 6-24 hours depending on the brand of material. The drying time is indicated in the passport for the mixture. Grate on the opening for overflow can be set to dry, but on the drain hole it is better to fix it after the coating has hardened. It is advisable to proceed to the operation of the bath not earlier than 48 hours after the end of the process of acrylic filling.
Tools for work:
- a Bulgarian or a drill;
- abrasive sandpaper;
- a shovel for mixing;
- trowel rubber.
The use of liquid acrylic is an effective way to repair a bath. If the process technology is observed, the minimum lifetime of the acrylic coating is 10 years.
