How to repair a water tap

There are no eternal things. Especially it concerns constantly operated devices. Therefore, nobody is surprised by the need to repair the crane, which periodically rises before the householder.

This indispensable in everyday life, the subject became so familiar to us, and so traditional are its traditional habits, that almost everyone seems to know about them. However, when the tap starts to flow or, conversely, does not allow water to flow, suddenly it turns out that it's not all that it can fix it correctly, and quickly (and in the case of the water pipe from the speed of troubleshooting, the safety of your apartment and relations with neighbors largely depends).

Therefore, probably, many are useful to know what the features of repairing this device consist in. Moreover, it is not difficult.

A single-valved cock and a two-valve mixer are relatively simple devices in the technical plan. Also quite simple on the design and the lever mixer, the work of which is based on the use of a special mixing cartridge. In many respects, for this reason, all of them are characterized by a small number of standard faults.

With what kind of malfunctions, because of which it is necessary to repair the crane, the consumer most often collides? This is, first of all, leaking water with a tightly closed valve, as well as its continuous flow due to the inability to close the valve due to the free rotation of the handle.

As a rule, the following technical problems lead to the indicated faults:

  • wear of the rubber seal;
  • packing stuffing box;
  • wear or mechanical damage to the threads of the spindle;
  • accumulation of lime deposits on the lining;
  • occurrence of cracks.

Materials and Tools

In order to quickly and efficiently restore the performance of the broken device, it is recommended to prepare the following tools:

  • wrench;
  • adjustable wrench;
  • pliers;
  • slotted screwdriver;
  • knife building;
  • repair of gaskets.

The simplest is the repair of an old faucet with a single valve (Fig. 1).

First of all, the flow of water is blocked. With a screwdriver, you need to carefully remove the decorative plastic (metal, ceramic) plug on the valve. Unscrewing the screw, remove the "lamb". Then use a wrench (adjustable) wrench to unscrew the axle by turning it counter-clockwise.

The rubber seal is located in the lower half of the crane. In order to remove the gasket from the unit, it is necessary to unscrew the screw holding it. A new repair kit is installed on the place of the worn (damaged) rubber part. It screwed with a screw, after which the axle, rotating clockwise, tightly screwed into the body of the device. Finally, the valve handle is installed in place, screwed with a screw and put on a plug.

It is worth noting that outdated models often have a plastic spacer, which protects the mechanism from seepage between the axle and the body of the crane. This gasket may also be damaged. In this case, it should be replaced.

More modern designs are with gaskets from technical ceramics. Their replacement is somewhat different from replacing rubber seals in older models.

The initial part of the dismantling of the crane-axle with ceramic seals is almost identical to the dismantling of the axlebox with a rubber gasket. After it is unscrewed from the case, from its lower part it is possible to remove first the auxiliary rubber gasket and then the two ceramic gaskets located under it.

When removing the ceramics, it is necessary to remember, in what position the seals were before dismantling. The fact is that these gaskets are oriented by special grooves, and if you install new ones not at the right place, the error will result in opening / closing the water in the direction opposite to the usual one. In other words, the valve will be opened by turning the valve clockwise, and closing - while rotating counter-clockwise.

In order to remove the gaskets, it is necessary to unscrew the restrictive screw that is available on the turntable. This screw is designed to adjust the angle of rotation of ceramic gaskets.

After the screw is removed, the stem is removed from the housing. Now you can replace worn gaskets. They are carefully cut with a construction knife, new seals are installed on the vacant seat. In conclusion, the updated rod is put in its place and fixed with a restrictive screw.

The crane-axle thus repaired is screwed into the mixer body. Twisting is done as far as it will go. After that, the axle is clamped with a wrench for 2 turns, set the "lamb", fixing it with a screw, and place the plug.

Features of repair

Reflecting on whether to undertake for the restoration of the lever mixer on its own, each person should be aware that such work requires certain experience.

If the layman still decides to repair himself, he should remember that to change worn out parts should only be on similar ones, in order not to spoil the whole device.

The main difference between this valve (Fig. 2) and the valve version is the use of a special cartridge in its design, which allows simultaneous adjustment of cold and hot water.

Disassembly for repair begins with the removal of the cap, which is on the handle. The adjusting knob is raised to the upper position, with its hole to be aligned with the internal fixing screw. Then, the handle should be removed and the cartridge removed from the housing.

Next, the cartridge should be carefully inspected for possible defects, signs of deterioration of gasket seals. If they are found to be unusable, they must be replaced. After installing a new seal, the product is assembled in reverse order.

It is also possible to wear rubber seals at the junction of the overflow gander with the body of the mixer. In this case, unscrew the lock nut and gently remove the gander from the body, turning it slightly in different directions.

Further, rubber seals are checked for the presence of the above defects on their surface. If signs of wear are present, the rubber rings should be replaced. After this, the gander is put in place and clamped with a fixing nut.

In general, the described operations do not represent special difficulties for people who do everything accurately and with observance of all technological rules. Only in this case it is possible to count on a qualitative result.
