For several decades, gypsum boards have been used in construction, and its popularity does not fall at all. This phenomenon is explained simply: it is easy to work with gypsum cardboard, it is absolutely clean by ecological indicators and is combined with almost any finishing materials. But how to put a tile on a drywall, not everyone knows.
The technology of laying tiles on gypsum boards is not much different from the facing of concrete walls.
Excellent on gypsum cardboard are glued wallpaper, the paint falls perfectly. But often home-based masters ask the question: do they put tiles on drywall sheets? The answer is yes. Even the technology of masonry differs little from that used for facing concrete walls. But let's not run ahead and talk about this issue more thoroughly.
Tools and materials
Laying scheme of tile on drywall.
If the wall of gypsum board is to be tiled, then it must be properly mounted. The matter concerns the organization of a skeleton for a material: the distance between the profiles should not exceed by more than 20% the linear dimension of the tile. The wall of gypsum board in this case will get a lot of elasticity, which will compensate the efforts of the master when laying the tiles. Lay the SCL so that all joints are in the same plane. We glue them with a patter and smooth it with putty.
And now about the materials. In order to lay the tile on a drywall, you will need:
- high-quality primer;
- paint brush;
- spatula and comb (with a depth of 6 mm);
- adhesive for tiles;
- building level;
- cutter for tiles;
- Adjusting crosses (1,5 mm);
Primers and markings
The scheme of the device of a wall from gypsum cardboard.
At the initial stage, the wall must be primed. This will allow the adhesive to get more reliable adhesion to the paper base of gypsum board, the very same paper will hold onto the gypsum core very firmly.
The primer should dry (according to the instructions for use), and the tile can already be laid. But first you need to carefully measure the walls and hold a horizontal line on the wall at a distance of 5-7 mm. Under this line it is recommended to fix the rail.
And the tile will be laid easier, and all the seams will be clear.
The order of implementation
Preparatory work has been completed, and it is already possible to start the main work. On the wall of gypsum board is applied a layer of quality glue (about 1 cm). From the bottom upwards the comb is removed excess glue. The comb must be kept at an angle of 45 degrees to the plane of the wall. The ridges should turn out evenly along the entire length. If this does not work the first time, then in the "bad" places the adhesive layer needs to be enlarged and the operation performed again.
And now the tile is taken and firmly on the whole surface is pressed against the wall.
Knock on the tiles is not necessary, it is enough to give it a reciprocating motion along the guide bar.
The adhesive will spread evenly under the tiles, which will ensure a secure bond. Similarly, all the tiles are laid. Between the tiles we insert the crosses from the plastic (after each).
Masonry on a corner wall
Technical characteristics of tiles.
The angular part of the wall needs very precise marking and certain skills. Putting tiles in these places is quite difficult. First measure the distance between the edges of the tile and the wall. From the received figure it is necessary to take away a thickness of a tile and 2,5 mm more. Based on the measurements obtained in the calculations, cut off a piece of tile and glue it tightly to its predecessor. Between the pruning and the adjacent wall, a gap will be obtained. It is not necessary to be afraid of this, since the next tile must enter the resulting groove. And now you can continue to put the tile on the second wall in the same sequence.
The second row of tiles is laid in the same way as the first, with the only difference being that all the same crosses are inserted between the rows to adjust the joints.
Usually, in the upper part of the facing wall, the lining is made of another material or other decorations. If this is your case, then do not forget to measure their thickness. Usually it is somewhat less than the thickness of the tile. This means that the adhesive layer needs to be enlarged. Otherwise, no changes: the same styling technology.
Have you finished laying the tile and are going to start grouting the seams? Do not rush to do this. The water must be evaporated freely from the glue, otherwise the paper will wither and the gypsum board will lose its smoothness. It is also not necessary to accelerate the drying of the glue, since the tile will fall off very quickly under the influence of fumes. Allow the adhesive to dry for at least 40 hours. And now you need to remove all the remnants of glue from the seams and build a fugue or special mass for grouting the seams.
The resulting mass should resemble clay. It should be pressed into the seams with fingers or a rubber spatula. The dried excess grouts are either cut with a special knife or sandpapered off.
Let's hope that you understand how to put the tile directly on the drywall, and during the repair you will not make mistakes. It is clear that we all learn from mistakes, but to do it better on someone else's experience. Sorry for the spoiled gypsum board, and the time spent.
