If you decide to install ceramic tiles without the help of specialists, but do not have any experience in this matter, you should start by studying the instructions. Here it does not matter at all whether you will be laying tiles in the bathroom or in another room, first you need to determine the required amount of material. To do this, you need to measure the surface area with which you will work. The calculation of the material is carried out in accordance with the received data, while it should be counted not the m², but the number of tiles. Ways of laying are different, therefore, in the first stage of work, it is also necessary to decide which of them to give their preference. As you understand, each separate method has its own nuances, accordingly, here one should be more careful.
Ideal floor and wall cover for the bathroom is ceramic tiles.
Methods for laying ceramic tiles on the floor may differ in the type of pattern (diagonal, straight, herringbone, etc.). Keep in mind - although the surface area is the same, the consumption of ceramic tiles will vary depending on which method you choose. Ceramic tiles - the material is fragile enough, so it is desirable to purchase it with a small margin in case of defect or deterioration during operation. The editing process can be entrusted to a professional, but if you are sure that you can manage on your own, you can start working.
After choosing the method of laying and acquiring the necessary amount of ceramic tiles, you should start preparing the surface. First of all, the floor must be cleaned of residues of building material and other contaminants. Before the installation of tiles on the floor, waterproofing is carried out and a soil composition is applied, which helps to smooth the foundation. After waiting for the absolute drying of the floor, you can proceed to the stage of laying the tiles in the bathroom.
Ways of laying
Figure 1. The most common schemes of laying tiles in the bathroom.
Most experts use straight or diagonal methods for laying tiles in the bathroom. If previously you did not have to deal with the laying of ceramic tiles, it is better to give your preference to a direct type of pattern, since it is the simplest.
Having chosen the method of installation, proceed to dividing the floor area into 4 equal parts, this approach to the work process will ensure the maximum level of lining. To do this, you will need cords, which should be pulled, starting from the middle of each wall surface so that they intersect strictly in the center of the floor.
For the diagonal installation of ceramic tiles, additional use of cords is required - from the center of the room they are directed to each corner of the bathroom. As you understand, this scheme considerably complicates the task. The most common schemes of laying you can see in Fig. 1.
Stage of preparation
For the installation of ceramic tiles, a specially designed adhesive or mastic is used. During the preparation of adhesive composition, it is necessary to take into account all the requirements specified in the instruction, since any inconsistencies can cause the fragility of the cladding.
Tools for laying tiles.
Ceramic tile is also recommended to prepare, so that the material does not take moisture from the mastic or glue, it must be soaked in cold water. Thus, you can get a good grip of tile and surface.
Before you begin the process of laying ceramic tiles in the bathroom, a primer must be applied to the previously prepared floor.
For surfaces that absorb moisture strongly, two or more primer layers are recommended.
If you prefer to use mastic to lay tiles on the floor, the actions will be slightly different. The composition layer should correspond to the thickness of the ceramic tile.
Apply the mastic over small areas, as this material has the property of quickly hardening. For the same reason, tile laying on the floor is necessary at an accelerated pace.
Layout of the tile is done to calculate the number of tiles, in order to know where to put the whole or cut tiles.
Whatever methods of laying ceramic tiles are used, fixing the elements in butt is undesirable. According to the technology, facing the bathroom with tiles requires the presence of seams, the minimum width of which should be at least 3 mm.
It should be noted that in the case of installing tiles in the bathroom and other rooms where there are often temperature changes, it is recommended to leave the gap width about 10 mm. In the case of properly made lining, the width of the joints along the entire floor will be the same.
In order to facilitate this task, when installing tiles on the floor, you can use special plastic crossings. After laying the tile, in order to obtain greater strength, tap the surface with a wooden or rubber mallet, it is necessary to act with extreme caution.
Despite the fact that, according to experts, plywood does not have sufficient strength, there are cases when laying tiles still perform on such a surface. The technology in this case is somewhat different, but just like the cement surface, the floor of plywood sheets requires careful preparation in the form of cleaning from contamination and leveling.
When laying tiles on the floor made of plywood, it is very important to observe a number of the following nuances:
Scheme of marking and installation of supports for laying tiles.
- Plywood sheets in this case should have the maximum strength and moisture resistance.
- If the installation of tiles on the floor is carried out in a room in which there is high humidity, before facing the surface must be covered with a waterproofing material.
- To ensure that the lining in the bathroom has served a long time, it is recommended to use glue composition for work, which has such quality, as elasticity. You can, for example, use polyurethane parquet two-component glue.
When facing the ceramic tile floors in the bathroom, made of plywood sheets, you should adhere to a certain scheme:
- It is necessary to treat the lag with special care. Do not forget about the distance between each element, which should not be more than 40 cm.
- In order to save the adhesive composition for laying tiles on the floor, it is recommended to use a spatula-dispenser that has special slots.
It should be noted that laying tiles on the floor of plywood sheets has its advantages, among which it can be noted:
- Quick drying of the adhesive composition.
- Cement load is absent.
- The process of work does not take much time.
Ceramic tiles can be laid almost on any base.
Very often gipsokartonnye sheets, which have waterproof properties, are used to perform the rough floor to subsequently lay on it a ceramic tile. If your bathroom is lined with plasterboard, which does not have the necessary qualities, the life of the cladding will be significantly reduced.
In this case, gypsum-fiber (gypsum plaster) sheets are installed on top of a special frame, for the manufacture of which wooden slats are used (which is particularly undesirable if the tile is a bathroom) or a metal profile.
Installation of plasterboard sheets for the subsequent laying of ceramic tiles in the bathroom can be done with a special glue.
If you are to make the facing of tiles for the first time, it is better to refuse this method, because it is distinguished by its laboriousness in connection with the need to achieve a perfectly flat surface.
When laying tiles in the bathroom on a surface that is lined with waterproof gypsum boards, it is recommended to use a polypropylene reinforcing mesh.
Thus, you can get the best possible adhesion of the surface and material. The mesh should be mounted on top of the sheets, using PVA glue, for additional fixation, staples can be used. Before proceeding with the process of installing ceramic tiles, a soil composition (preferably at least 2 layers) should be applied on the surface of the GCR.
The scheme of laying tiles on the walls of the bathroom.
A list of the main materials and tools that may be needed when making ceramic tiles with their own hands:
- glutinous composition;
- priming composition;
- varnish (for protection of seams);
- roll of polypropylene reinforcing mesh;
- PVA glue;
- plastic frogs;
- capacity (for preparation of glutinous composition);
- Brush or roller (to coat the surface with a primer);
If you decide to perform the work on the surface lining from the GCR with your own hands, it's better not to experiment, but to use glue, designed for working with tiles and plasterboard. This adhesive is elastic, which does not allow the base to deform.
After the bathroom is faced with a new ceramic tile, it remains to complete the final stage - grouting joints. In order to provide the surface with maximum protection against moisture, it is advisable to use a specially designed lacquer that is applied over the joints after the grouting has been completed.
