Kitchens with mdf facades - 10 tips for the buyer

The design and the final price of the future kitchen largely depends on the facades. Therefore, choosing a new kitchen in the salon, the first thing you need to pay attention to is the doors and only then the frame, filling, fittings, etc.

For those who are planning to buy a new kitchen MDF, we have prepared 10 main tips for its selection and a small selection of real photos that will help you navigate.

A little theory about the material

  • Abbreviation MDF (MDF) - stands for Medium Density Fiberboard and in translation means "medium density fiberboard". In short, MDF is a material from compressed wood chips, "bound" by resins.

  • MDF kitchens are more appropriately called "kitchens with MDF facades", because its frame, shelves and walls are often made of laminated chipboard and, less often - from plywood and MDF;

What MDF is better than wood chipboard and wood?

  • The variability of decoration and design (in comparison with the DSP). The MDF base can be: painted, enameled (matt / glossy enamel), covered with plastic film, veneer, patina (pictured below) and can even have a concave / convex shape and milling;

  • Higher wear and tear, thermal and moisture resistance, tolerance to external influences. Wooden facades can be scratched, cracked, cracked over time, and fasteners in the doors of the chipboard are "spattered";
  • Cheaper than a tree.

What are the facades of MDF worse than wooden and "chipboard"?

  • MDF costs more chipboard and weighs more, so they rarely make cases;
  • MDF is less noble and durable. The tree wins in eco-friendliness, "holds" the fasteners longer and is subject to restoration.

The service life of MDF kitchens is on the average 10 years and more with careful exploitation.

10 tips for the buyer

  1. Butts - this is the weakest place of the facades of MDF and the main indicator of the quality of the kitchen. If its durability is important for you, then choose facades in the aluminum profile or with ABS edge (1,2-1,5 mm). Premium-class furniture should be trimmed with veneer or wood edge, and the worst choice would be facades with melamine edges.
  2. The set with straight facades, located in one row, will cost less than a corner with rounded facades by 10-15%. An example of a kitchen design with curved facades is shown in the photo below (scroll right).

  1. When buying a set, ask the seller what grade of emission the MDF refers to, and ask for certificates. Remember that material of class E1 is more ecological and qualitative, but MDF class E2 releases formaldehyde (in the open form) and is banned in the production of children's furniture.
  2. In the shops you will most likely like the facades with high gloss finish, which is achieved in three ways:
  • staining the MDF plate with colored enamels in several layers. Enamelled facades MDF - the most expensive (sometimes more expensive than the kitchen from the array), because very thermo-, wear and moisture resistant, durable and amenable to restoration;
  • MDF kitchen with enamelled facades
  • MDF kitchen with enamelled facades
  • coated with acrylic plastics. Minus - susceptibility to scratches, but at the same time they are susceptible to restoration by polishing;

Kitchen MDF with acrylic glossy coating

  • high-gloss PVC film is applied. This is the most affordable option, but more than others subject to deformation from moisture and mechanical influences.

By the way, the most popular glossy kitchens from MDF - light shades: white, beige, cream.

  1. Facades of MDF, lined on all sides with veneer (thin section thickness of 0.2-1 mm), externally indistinguishable from the panels of wood, but more affordable. At the same time, they are more thermally and moisture resistant, although still their surface also requires careful treatment. This combination can be called one of the optimal. In the photo below, an example of a kitchen with lower facades, painted with enamel and top - with veneer trim.

  1. In the category of "medium-priced" facades, there are two choices:
  • products made of MDF coated with paper-laminated plastic - are slightly more expensive than film facades, but also higher in quality, more moisture and heat resistance;
  • Facades with a coating of paper-laminated plasticFacades with a coating of paper-laminated plastic
  • Facades with a coating of paper-laminated plasticFacades with a coating of paper-laminated plastic
  • products made of MDF in PVC film - some lose on the performance characteristics of the first option, but are slightly cheaper and provides more opportunities for decoration and design. For example, you can choose classic facades with milling. Minus - afraid of high temperatures, for example, prolonged exposure to steam from a boiling kettle.

  1. And finally, the cheapest option is the facades of MDF with the finishing of paper-resin film (photo below). Such kitchens gradually lose demand and leave the market because of very low quality - the coating quickly cleaves and swells with water, but with the role of temporary or cottage kitchen such sets will cope perfectly well.

  1. Keep in mind that although MDF is considered to be a middle-class material, the price of facades largely depends on the specifics of the finish. Thus, MDF panels with metallic effect, pearls, chameleon, etc. are more expensive than natural wood facades.
  2. Choosing a set, please specify whether the firm undertakes to manufacture facades of non-standard sizes or only standard formats are available (usually 30, 45, 60 and 90 cm wide).
  3. And now a little about the manufacturers. Qualitative facades of Russian manufacture are offered by well-known brands "Maria", "Kitchen Courtyard", "Call", Elt and "Atlas-Lux". By the way, most professional designers work with these companies. The facades of European production are significantly more expensive, including because of their wide popularity. But we must give them due - the quality of not only the facades and their coatings, but also the skeletons of chipboard they have very high. Pay attention to the cuisine brands: Italian Aster Cucine, Scavolini, Pedini, Snaidero and others (for lovers classical cuisines), Czech Hanak (decent quality and relatively affordable prices), German ALNO (for those who are looking for facades with photo printing and unusual effects) and Nolte Kuchen (famous for modern kitchens).
